What is JEE Advanced?

JEE Advanced is conducted each year by one of the zonal IITs under the direction of the Joint Admission Board. It is taken only by candidates who have already qualified through JEE Main and who meet the additional conditions published in that year's brochure. The examination is computer-based and consists of two compulsory papers, each covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Both papers must be attempted.

How JEE Advanced differs from JEE Main

The syllabus overlap between the two examinations is large, but the way questions are asked is very different. JEE Main rewards accuracy and speed across a broad set of standard problems. JEE Advanced sets fewer questions that each require several linked steps, careful reading and a genuine understanding of why a result holds. It also uses question formats that JEE Main does not: multiple-correct-option questions with partial marking, matching-list questions, paragraph-based sets and numerical-answer questions. The marking scheme is redesigned almost every year and is announced only shortly before the exam, so candidates are expected to read the instructions on the paper itself with care. Role of JEE Main qualification

JEE Main Paper 1 acts as the screening stage. Each year a limited number of top performers, in the order of merit and distributed across categories as prescribed, become eligible to register for JEE Advanced. Reaching that cut-off is a necessary condition, not a sufficient one — the remaining eligibility criteria in the JEE Advanced brochure apply as well. Registration for JEE Advanced is separate from JEE Main and has its own window and fee.

The basic eligibility concept

Eligibility for JEE Advanced is usually built from a few independent conditions:

• Performance at the required level in JEE Main Paper 1 for the current year.
• A limit on the number of times a candidate may attempt JEE Advanced, within consecutive years.
• Conditions relating to the year in which Class 12 or an equivalent examination was first passed.
• An age condition, with relaxation for certain categories.
• Restrictions on candidates who have previously accepted admission to an IIT, whether or not they continued in the programme.

Examination structure

JEE Advanced has two papers held on the same day, in two sittings. Each paper is of three hours, with compensatory time provided for candidates entitled to it, and each contains separate Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics sections. The total marks, number of questions per section and the marking rules — including how much is deducted for a wrong response and how partial credit is awarded — are set fresh each year and published with the paper. Candidates aiming for the architecture programme at certain IITs also take a separate Architecture Aptitude Test after qualifying in JEE Advanced.

IIT admissions

Qualifying in JEE Advanced makes you eligible to participate in counselling; it does not by itself allot a seat. IIT seats are filled together with NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority on the JoSAA website, where candidates fill and order their choices of institute and programme and seats are allotted over several rounds on the basis of rank, category and choice. A few other institutions of national importance also admit students on the basis of the JEE Advanced result through their own processes.
